alcohol in cosmetics

What are they  ?

Aluminum salts are widely used: as adjuvants in vaccines, coagulants in water treatments and antacid drugs. Furthermore, they are naturally present in traces in food and water.

To identify them in our products, take a look at the ingredients list on packaging. They can be found under names such as ALUMINUM SULFATE, ALUMINUM CHLORIDE or ALUMINUM CHLOROHYDRATE.

Where do they  come from ?

Aluminum is the most abundant metal in the earth's crust and the third most abundant element after oxygen and silicium.
Alum stone, which contains an aluminum salt, has long been known for its astringent properties.

The aluminum salts used in our products are synthesized.

Why and how  do we use them ?

We use aluminum salts in our antiperspirant products in a safe way for our consumers.

To meet the demands of some of our consumers, we also develop deodorants without aluminum salts and work on equally effective alternatives.

Why are they  questioned ?

Aluminum salts are accused of playing a role in the development of breast cancer and Alzheimer's disease.

Facts:

  • A recent study has shown that ~ 0.01% of the aluminum present in an antiperspirant product penetrates the skin, which demonstrates only a negligible amount of aluminum is absorbed

  • The safety of aluminum salts have been examined by many international expert groups over the last 10 years including the World Health Organization, the US Food and Drug Administration, the American Cancer Society as well as the French Agency for the Safety of Health Products.

  • All confirmed that current knowledge does not support the link between aluminum salts used in cosmetics and breast cancer or Alzheimer's disease. These conclusions are consistent with the limited capability of aluminum salts to penetrate the skin. More information here.

Why are they  used ?

Aluminum salts typically used in antiperspirants are the aluminium chlorohydrates. They are effective in combatting perspiration and associated odors. They reduce sweating by forming small crystals at the mouth of the channels through which sweat flows. Insoluble forms of aluminum are also used in the colored pigments of lipsticks and in toothpastes to eliminate tooth staining due to tea or coffee.
